Why wasn't Baca held in contempt of court?
It wasn't on the court's docket Friday, and I imagine Judge Sauer had a few other matters on his plate.
I'm hoping that Monday, he'll issue an Order to Show Cause to Baca as to why Baca or the Sheriff's Department shouldn't be held in contempt for the knowing and willing violation of a court order.
I don't quite get the antagonism. Sure, she's obnoxious, contributes nothing useful to society, and in this case had it coming. On the other hand, the girl has quite plainly never had a truly hard day in her life. Getting chased by papparazzi is as tough as it gets for her. Or at least as tough as it used to get. This is probably a good thing for her in the long run, as the adversity could stimulate her to grow a real personality and some sense of what suffering means.
But I find it hard to laugh at, since her suffering is apparently genuine. That's almost like laughing at someone's hair falling out after chemotherapy. She's in pain as her useless-social-parasite syndrome is being treated. She's not without fault, but she didn't ask to be spoiled. It just sort of happened as she grew. Now, I would not object to her parents being caned, Singapore-style. I might even smile as it happened.
Well considering the fact that they couldn't produce medical papers to support the existance of any "medical condition" I hope he gets thrown in jail. This judge doesn't seem to take kindly to such open disrespect. You live in LA, does Baca do crap like this alot? This seems like a ready made campaign moment for any challengers come next election.

This is the first time I've heard of anything quite like this. Baca turns 10,000 minor criminal loose every years because of overcrowding (more, when his budget is coming up for a vote), but there wasn't any claim of overcrowding until post-factor justifications started being tossed around by the pundits.
Baca is a really politically savvy guy. I'm surprised he jumped into this mess with both feet. I heard speculation of threats for ol' man Hilton about spending millions to defeat Baca in the next election. I'm also wondering about the possiblity of bribery.

My best guess is that theoretically Baca could still serve if he was sent to jail--except for a felony. Politically, he'd probably be forced to resign, or he'd be facing recall.
Last Friday, the felling in L.A. was absolute fury. I work at one of the courthouses, and we try and stay neutal 'cause we never know when some dispute is going to end up in front of our courtroom. But Friday, people were spitting venom. I heard speculation of threats, bribery, etc. Since 9/11, I've never seen my co-employees so upset about anything.
Across the plaza is the County Board of Supervisors. I heard they received hundreds of phone calls and got hundreds of e-mail--100% saying Hilton should be in jail. Two of the five Supervisors are already calling for an investigation. People are pissed!

Evidently sheriff's have had the discretion to place prisoners where they want, even changing their sentence to house arrest. According to this article however the judge had forbid placing Paris under house arrest before she went to prison. It appears that Paris' case is going to be an important one, possibly even setting a precedent, when it is appealed.
I can see a sheriff having the discretion to move a prisoner, but I'm amazed that they have the power to send a prisoner home.

L.A. jails are grossly overcrowded.
Except they couldn't claim that in this case since she was in a private cell.
What do you know about Judge Sauer, Zkribbler? How personally do you think he'll take such a blatant disregarding of his order on the part of the sheriff?

I don't know him at all. There's 400 judges in L.A. plus 200 commissioners, referees, and "retired" judges sitting on assignment. I know scores of them, but not hundreds.
It'll be interesting to see what happens Monday.
The judge could issue an OSC re contempt, or
he could do nothing at all.
Sheriff Baca really savaged him at the press converence Friday. The Code of Judicial Ethics bar the judge from publically commenting on a case, so Judge Sauer can't issue a rebuttal.
Keep us posted. Here's hoping the judge holds Bacca in contempt.
