Denmark's National Day, or rather, Constitution Day, was yesterday, 5th of June. It's to commemorate our first free and democratic constitution, given in 1849. All subsequent revisions of the constitution, e.g. in 1915 and 1953, were also given on this date.

It has traditionally been 1/2 a day off in most trades, with business ending at noon. But it has become a bit blurred in recent years, with some businesses and public institutions closing all day, while others remain open all day. A bit of a mess, holiday-wise.
Unfortunately where I work, we don't get the day off that day

In the meantime you'll just have to use the date the union with Ireland took effect as a surrogate.

Sweden never have developed a real national day that means something to the majority of the populace, like Norway have. As for GB, I don't know how their day is. Norway's is a celebration of both our constitution, which were ready made that day(May 17th) in 1814, and a celebration of our freedom. German occupation ended right before May 17th 1945 and we were not allowed to celebrate the day during the occupation. After that the day has been even more important. It's a national holiday, which we celebrate by some of the citizens of the cities marching through the cities(with the rest watching and cheering) with bands playing and the people singing. This is the children's day, and a family day. And, of course, we don't have silly military parades like some other countries. Our national day is not the military's day, thankfully!

why so you don't. I made the USAian assumption that when our frozen neighbors do something to assert their britishness, y'all do it is well, which is of course rather naive of me.

We actually did get the day off on the Queen's birthday (16 April) when I attended elementary school.

Prison inmates used to sometimes get pardoned as well. I suppose now they just get a couple extra conjugal visits and a new flatscreen TV. Maybe a bit of lobster and truffles to make it worth their while. If someone were to offer them a pardon, they'd totally have an emotional breakdown.

National days are a complete an utter waste of time. 'Britain Day' will be celebrated by absolutely nobody. National saint days are even worse. A tiny fraction of the UK population attends church and an even tinier fraction will have any real idea as to who these people are.

The UK is better for not having dreck like this. Same with citizenship ceremonies and other nonsense that New Labour seems to like importing.

Indeed - but to make it a national holiday is probably a bit far fetched.

I propose the month of July be made a national holimonth. Mandatory trips to the beach or picnics or whatever. And in celebration of the national holimonth, all airlines would knock 50% off the price of a ticket to someplace warm.
