I'm kind of interested in hearing from our British and Swedish posters about the idea of having a National Day to celebrate patriotism and to give workers an extra day off. I understand that Sweden only began celebrating its National Day in 2005 while the UK is plaining on putting a new National Day in place this year. Former colonies have long celebrated their day of independence as a national holiday and a day to build nationalism but what is the motivating factors in Sweden and the UK? Is it just left of center parties wanting to give workers an additional day off or is it right of center parties trying to fill people with patriotism and a sense of national pride? What gives?

We already have a May Day here.
Depends on what the new day is to celebrate or commemorate or when its to be.
We don't need another holiday in Winter, which is from October to June.Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.
...patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone. Edith Cavell, 1915

i would prefer to see each country in the union have its saint's day as a national holiday."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

Denmark's National Day, or rather, Constitution Day, was yesterday, 5th of June. It's to commemorate our first free and democratic constitution, given in 1849. All subsequent revisions of the constitution, e.g. in 1915 and 1953, were also given on this date.
Open-air meetings are held across the country, in which politicians speak on current issues as relating to the constitution. They're fairly well attended.
It has traditionally been 1/2 a day off in most trades, with business ending at noon. But it has become a bit blurred in recent years, with some businesses and public institutions closing all day, while others remain open all day. A bit of a mess, holiday-wise.
Greenland's National Day is 21st of June, the longest day of the year, to celebrate the granting of home rule for Greenland in 1979.

That way we can all be one big happy integrated set of peoples.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
