    Gay hotel can ban straights
    28/05/2007 09:09 - (SA)

Sydney - An Australian hotel favoured by gays has won the right to refuse entry to heterosexuals, according to a media report on Monday.

The management of the Peel Hotel in Melbourne said they had applied for and won exemption from the Equal Opportunity Act to prevent insults and abuse being directed at their mainly gay patrons.

In particular, the hotel raised concerns about gatherings of large groups of heterosexual men and of groups of women out for so-called "hen nights", said the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The decision by the Victoria state Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) gives the hotel the right to refuse entry to people considered a threat to the safety and comfort of its patrons.

Human rights group Liberty Victoria supported the decision, said vice-president Michael Pearce.

"There are numerous places where heterosexual people can go and I think what VCAT has said is that there aren't that many places where gay people can go and meet without the risk of being harassed or vilified, and that they are entitled to have their own spaces to do that in," he said.

Exclusion of straight women from gaybar

On a side note; I used to go to a gay bar with my friends in Quebec City(Le Drague), they accepted me pretty well(since I was a man, even if I was straight)... but they were always mad at seeing girls coming to the bar for dancing.

The girls were usually more... explicit while they were dancing than in a straight bar (and usually they were going on the speaker barely naked) and some girls were always trying to "convert" gays to have sex with them.

And Girls trying to convert gayman into a straight man, pathetic

This is reverse discrimination and it is wrong!
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

What do you mean reverse discrimination? That would implicate, that gay people aren't normal. Racist or sexist, you pick.

There are those houses for womyn which can ban males too I think.....

BTW, is it now explicitly about banning all straight persons, because banning "people considered a threat to the safety and comfort of its patrons" does sound rather neutral?

I have mixed feelings about it. Gays are a tiny minority so it'd feel good for them to have a place where they can pick up each other without risk of asking a straightman. If a gay club attracts too many straights, its purpouse is lost. But on the other hand, it's discriminatory. I'm hesitant.

yeah but dude, how can a straight man get offended by being picked up at a GAY CLUB? I mean, that just doesn't make any sense, "yeah I come here for the music!". Sure you do.

Then again, I don't think all clubs etc. have to let people in they don't want to let in. If you want gay only, I don't care. You can have it. Why would it ruin my day? Or if someone wants a female only, again, this is not my problem. It is not my problem if someone establishes a club I can't go into. Why would it be my problem?

Wow, being straight is a threat? Then certainly gays can be banned from all "straight" hotels...shall we identify all the other "threats"?

Would you consider it discrimination to ban homosexuals from a hotel? If it is not ok to ban homosexuals from a hotel, why is it ok to ban straight people from a hotel?

And my post was not saying that gay people are not normal. I don't how in the world you can get that from what I posted.

Well, if I was in a hotel with lots of hot girls I'd consider the other guys a threat without doubt

diplomat, I don't have a problem with you saying it's discrimination. It's easy to agree with that.

But when you say it's reverse discrimination, that's sexist, racist and possibly against human rights.

                      Ok then. It is discrimination.

I consider discrimination to be wrong whether it is against gays or straight.

I still don't get where you are getting the racist or sexist part. How can I be racist for pointing out the fact that in this case, we have homosexuals discriminating against heterosexuals? It is the group doing the discrimination that is racist or sexist. In this case, the homosexual groups are the sexist ones.

No, it means its discrimination done in reverse, i.e., done in favor of a group that typically suffers discrimination and against the "oppressors".

I assume in Russia they can.
