In American highschools, in many classes most anyone can get an A if they put a bit of work into it.

Other high schools at 1 or 2 full GPA points for people taking advanced courses. They can label pretty much anything advanced so there are many people with 4.0 grades on college applications who never actually received an A. This makes class rank really the only thing you can use grade wise from high schools. While people say that standarized tests are biased...school grades are pretty meaningless.

I also was relatively mid ranked in class. I was, however, the most successful after highschool. I think I was one of only two who graduated college 4 years after graduating highschool. In addition, I took the most academic direction, and went on to graduate school in a very demanding field, and at a top graduate school. Now, I did take the difficult classes in highschool, and found them easy, but I generally stopped doing homework when I still had a B.

I really don't think that grades in highschool show in correlation with how well you do in college/graduate scohol. I didn't go into the work world afterwards, so don't know about that.

I have a freind in graduate school, who is good, who got Ds in highschool, and only transfered to a (rather poor) 4 year college after a year or two of community college.

At most grades just show that the student was willing to work, which isn't the only thing needed to be successful in college.

Grades probably play the least role, which is as it should be.

Plan to take the SAT a couple times. I am excellent at standardized tests, but I just had a very bad test proctor that talked on her cell phone, ate noisily, and listened to her CD player quite loud too. There was also a smelly girl I was near that annoyed the hell out of me too.

I ended up having about a 200 point difference. I didn't need it to get into the college I was going to, but it did help with scholarships.

Some people take the test twice because they get really nervous and freak. Others just do better with practice. I had done even better on the PSAT a few years earlier so it was just inconsistent the score was a bit low.

I have continued by good test taking skills by getting in the top 1/3 on a national psych standardized test before graduating.

I should have also planned on taking the Physics GRE twice, as I lost my information to take the test and had a real stressed out time before hand.
