  • Clean Energy Idea - Treadmills!

I have in the past joked about giant hamster wheels as an energy source, but seeing as so many people are walking, or rather sitting around with an untapped energy supply - fat - why not plug them into the national grid via a treadmill?

People pay good money to go to the gym and consume electricity to have a little conveyor belt that allows them to run on the spot. Instead of burning electricity, they could be burning blubber and generating electricity it by a variant of the good old fashioned treadmill that used to be used in prisons to grind the corn.

Other devices could be engineered to allow people to use arm muscles, or cycles as generators, and we can help solve several problems at once. More clean energy without the foul environmental footprint of ugly, noisy windmills. Lard-arses get slim, fit, healthy and laid - and perhaps even getting paid for their energy production.

I expect the problem would be that it would take 10,000 people six months of exercise to generate enough juice to power a 40W lightbulb for ten minutes or something. Oh well - it was just an idea.

Screw the national grid. Have people provide their own energy needs through such machines. Those who don't exercise enough perish in the dark and cold.

You can call it -- wait for it -- "survival of the fittest."

There is of course the domestic option too, but I decided to promote the socialised version on behalf of the elderly and infirm.

Or we could just walk instead of drive.

That's hardly a new idea, as many of us already happily walk wherever we can. Furthermore, it has nothing to do with electricity generation, unless you meant walking on the treadmill.

Well no. Walk instead of drive. Saving energy is even better than generating it.

So switching off a machine in a hospital that was saving someone's life is better than generating clean energy? Yeah, right.

From an energy perspective yes, even better than walking.
