The only thing that makes it look like a British carrier is the ski jump, which, as has been commentated, was there because the Russians decided they didn't want to dick around with trying to pout a steam catapult in.

It's a purty looking ship, but it(the class) only went on, what, 2 deployments? What's the use of having carriers if you don't use them?

Also, I suspect that the Chinese are just tearing it apart to look for ideas for what kind of carrier they would want to build(they also bought the Minks as well). As of now it's hard to determine the size of carrier they'd want. Certainly, Russia's carrier-building know-how is atrophied, as is, well, pretty much everyone but America's( lol Charles de Gaulle and CVF)

Yeah, and it only took them fifteen years from laying the keel down to complete it. Plus the screws broke off during intial sea trials. It's an abortion of a carrier, too small and too big to be efficient.

The Nimitz class is 30+ years old and but they've come up with a new enlarged and improved Nimitz class like the USS Ronald Reagan (commissioned into service in 2003). At 104,000 tons it is the largest warship afloat and carries significantly more aircraft then even the old Nimitz class super carriers. In a fight against an enemy carrier it is going to be hard to beat given the number of escorts and the superior number of aircraft it has not to mention that it can launch and land more aircraft at the same time.

VTOL= not tactical control aircraft or tankers.

The idea is that by not using catapaults they reduce the need for special reinforcement of the undercarriage. OTOH it reduces the amount of weight the plane can carry anyway, so while the SU-33 is faster than a Harrier it can only carry 3 tons of armament.

If it is taking on harriers then it ran into an Amphib, not a carrier (on the American side). An F-18 would eat it for breakfast.

Pretty sad our amphibs an take on most countires carrier air wings.

That's not exactly a secret. I thought it was pretty much accepted that the US owns the naval aviation field?

bah! we use cruisers to shield the carrier. They are expendable, the carrier is not.
