The US 6th Fleet Command restricted movement of their ships within a firing range of a Russian sub. They knew her probable location, but were unable to detect her.

I don't think that is the case, that defeats the whole purpose. The idea is not to sink everything, but to get the high value unit. If the carrier/amphib/oilers are gone the mission of that group is gone, the escorts don't really matter at that point (at least in a Russia scenario).

Chances are every cruiser/destroyer will get at least two with SMs, probably more. If some of the left over missiles actually target the escorts (not called missile sponges for nothing) then that is even less going for the HVU. And the carrier types have RAM (ESSM soon) as well.

There was no ship-to-ship battles in the Falklands...except a British sub did sink the General Belgrano.

The last ship-to-ship battle I can think of is the Gulf of Tolken incident, where N. Vietnamese patrol boats fired torpedos at a U.S. destroyer. Except apparently that never really happened; LBJ just needed an excuse to attack North Vietnam.

Was there any naval warfare during the Greek-Turkish fight over Cyprus? I don't think so. I don't recall any naval warfare in the Israeli-Arab wars; or in the Iran-Iraq War...well, maybe some patrol boats. Nothing in the Korean War.

There was naval warfare in the Israeli-Arab wars. IIRC the first wartime use of ship to ship missiles was by Israelis against Egyptians.
