Why? Having 20 or 25% immigrants isn't especially surprising for any major city. Maybe if you're from Des Moines it seems overwhelming...

Mostly people think of Greater Washington as having very large numbers of blacks and few immigrants. Which happened to be true upto about 30 years ago. No little Italy, no Polish or German or Irish neighborhoods of note here.

Fairfax is only 72% white, and MoCo is only 65% white, and those are historically the 'affluent' counties here.

That's basically a snapshot of the difference between the US and Canada in terms of diversity, by the way. The US has a larger number of native-born blacks and either native-born or immigrant Hispanics. Canada has a larger number of native-born French speakers, a larger number of both native-born and immigrant East Asians, South Asians, Arabs and Southern and Eastern Europeans and a larger number of foreign born blacks (mainly from Haiti and West Africa)

I'd disagree that Canada has more East Asians then the US. East Asians, full or part, we counted at 11.9 million in the US as of the 2000 census and immigration along with natural population growth have only increased that number in the last 7 years. That would mean 1/3rd of Canada would have to be East Asian. It's just not likely.

Also Canada has more Arabs and other groups as a percentage of population but that really has to do with Canada's tiny starting population. With 300 million people the US can have much smaller numbers as a percentage of population but which result in much higher total numbers. The main factor here is the US has around 1000% more people in it.
