  • To mess with one is to mess with all

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has told Russia that any problems it has with an individual EU state are problems with the whole bloc.

About bloody time somebody said it.

How can Russia seriously claim to be a free country when it restricts the movement of its own people in addition to the Press? If you're in the opposition or if you are a member of the domestic press which isn't controlled by the Kremlin then you get banned from even getting on a plane and going to the city where the summit is held? WTF?

So why didn't someone say that when Bush was denouncing France and Germany as enemies of the USA?

I imagine when Bush & Cheney were just talking about "Old vs New Europe" it was just free, if insulting, speech while Russia is currently embargoing certain EU member states which takes things to a whole other level.

In the UK courts have been used to silence and bankrupt journalists for saying the wrong thing, and miners have in the past been prevented from moving around the country.

So my recollections of campaigns in the US against French produce at the time are faulty?

This was an intra-atlantic alliance row. Doesn't count.

Fine. So we can freely reiterate, they just deprive themselves from our finest Bordeaux.

Fox News and several other rightwing groups tried to create a boycott of French goods. That's very different from the government instituting an embargo which is what Russia has done to some EU states. That's private individuals urging people to boycott goods from a certain country vs a government mandating an embargo.

If memory serves after O'Reilly and Fox News called for a boycott imports from France actually went up!

Oh great. The Milosevic apologist has turned into a Putin apologist as well.

Are there not regular trans-atlantic trade and tariff spats, though - at govermnent level.

                          Let me guess, that's different.
