geepers man, Warhol knew he was overrated. Wasnt that kinda his whole shtick, kinda a parody of the fad worshipping art world of the time?

OTOH what he did WAS an extension of stuff going on by superior artists like Johns and Lichtenstein - raising questions of what exactly differentiated artistic images from commercial images, and showing that a commercial design, taken by an artist, and presented for reflection, could be art - thats why the soup cans mattered. But he went way beyond that, with his art factory, and his celeb involvement. He helped to bring modern art into disrepute, no? On the other hand he helped to lay the basis for our whole culture of irony, leading to internet trolls and the like.

I like Warhol because he punctures the mystique of art and the high-minded pretentions of many artists.

Wasn't part of the "greatness of Warhol" that he still made art but in far less personal way. Like he could have created the original design for a piece to be screenprinted, but the person who actually went through and did the painting was just one his eclectic crew in his factory.

I think he was applying industrial concepts to art production but that's all I really know.

Yeah I agree that he's overrated, though there is always the possibility that I'm just missing something. Though, just consider how much more popular he would be if Valerie Solanas had better aim.

Warhol was vulgar. He kicked the pretentious ****ers of their pedestall and showed commercialism and art aren't part of separate universes.

Warhol was really a very good artist for 15 minutes in mid-May of 1967.

After that period, however, his work seemed to decline in interest.

Has modern art ever been reputable? How dull, if that were the case.

If you want to point the finger at where modern art went disreputable, why not start with Caravaggio? Warhol might have painted cans and looked weird, but Caravaggion murdered people.

What's wrong with modern artists is that they think their disrepute is a mark of success.
