Asking them about evolution offends you?

No it isn't. It's an easy way to weed out some candidates who obviously shouldn't be voted for.

I agree. It's obvious that we shouldn't vote for anyone who believes we spawned from monkey butt sex.

There is a difference between being ignorant because you lack curiosity, and being ignorant by choice, which implies that you actually do know the other issue. I don't think people chose ignorance. They don't care enough to be curious.

Most take it by faith. I don't see why those who don't have faith in it should be considered sadder than those who do.

Most people just don't care enough. I Actually question whether many people on this site care enough to understand such things as evolution themselves.

Because most people lack curiosity about esoterical subjects as you yourself have said, most people do accept things only because they were taught it, and feel no reason to challenge their teachers. That said, I prefer people be given knowledge that they then accept without question than being given stories passing for knowledge, which they then accept without question.

And the sad part is that understanding the basic principles behind evolution is not difficult at all, even if knowing the mechanics of how it happens is something that requires lots of study.

NO. Real debates involve asking the voters and pols to think.

Has no one yet mentioned that it is politicians, not scientists, that make public policy and budgetary decisions?

"Do you believe in evolution" is a stupid question.
Yes I do believe in evolution, no I don't believe in evolution from one-cell organism to human.

And no, about 90-95% of the people in the western nations doesn't know anything about evolution but just believe in it because it's the dominant origins-theory. In the middle ages many people believed the earth was flat because that was the dominant earth-shape theory.

That doesn't make it right or wrong.
What disgusts me though is the arrogance of the pro-one-cell organism to human 'believers' show all the time. "Ooooooh, someone rejects our theory, he must be a total jerk and an ignorant idiot."

That's the same arrogance the 'scientists' of the middle ages had against those who believed in a round earth and a non-earth centered universe.

                    Arrogance
Dare to think different then the mass

And that counts both for the 'against the mass thinkers' in the middle ages and those who dare to do it now. It's always been those people who were most important for humanity. Not the huge giant group of "We all think alike and we are soooo true" people.

The French still appreciate intellectualism. The United States appreaciates people who are smart at making money or inventions, but they do not appreciate intellectualism.

They are being told it is scientific. But they don't really understand what scientific means, or why they should beleive some scientist rather than there mother.
And everybody with a public school education is given ample evidence to believe 'some scientist' over a random person (though it's not just 'some scientist', of course, it is the body of science and the basic rules of logic that apply to it.)

And it is mostly what is being taught by parents/etc, not what is being taught from the pulpit, which makes people not beleive in evolution. I have never heard, nor heard of, a sermon against evolution.

Then you haven't been to the same churches I and others I know have.

Your "no research" necessary is for them is worse than their family saying "this is the case". You are asking them to have faith in evolution, and they see no reason to have faith in evolution.

I am asking that they understand the concept of a history of research coming to a widely-accepted conclusion that is based on more than just ecclesiastical whim. That's not the same as asking them to go out and doing basic research, and is something that anybody should be capable of doing.

I don't care what people believe in. You can disregard science and choose the parts you like. I don't care. Most politicians are not very intelligent to begin with.

Let's rewind some years back... do you believe the earth is flat?

You can CHOOSE to listen what the pastor says, or you can just believe in science. When asked about scientific questions, I'd trust science. It's kind of the point.
It's a significant issue for candidates to many federal offices or to an office involved in education. It could effect their judgment on issues of funding for sciences or education curriculum decisions.
