Unitarian in that sense is something like centralized, just different. France is unitarian.

It appears it's called "unitary" when applies in politics. Obviously even the UK counts as unitary but I doubt that would continue to be so in case of Republicanism. It'd rather turn into a Spain-like structure (which already is federal).

i seem to remember that newsnight episode and paxman making him squirm, twas good.

all the main parties use loans for large contributions, rather than donations, as a way to avoid declaring who their backers are. labour brought in the last piece of legislation on party funding in the year 2000, which says that donations must be declared, but loans 'on commercial terms' were exempt. this was an attempt to bring transparency to party funding in the wake of various tory scandals in the 90s and the bernie ecclestone affair, among other things.

it's hardly surprising therefore that every party (but especially the main two) exploits this loophole. however only one party does to such an extent, that they have been investigated for not declaring loans not made under commercial terms. more seriously for selling honours, by offering peerages for these loans, or sponsorship of government flagship projects, such as city academies, and also for lying to the police in the course of their investigations into these alleged offences. the papers talk about as many as 5 people, very close to the prime minister, facing charges. it's pretty serious stuff and it absolutely stinks.
