  • Terrier saves 5 children from pit bull attack

    RIP, George.

Brave New Zealand dog suffered fatal injuries

09:26 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 2, 2007

    Associated Press

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday.

George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.

"George was brave – he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.

"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."

One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.

"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him – one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."

But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.

South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.

In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.

George, who was 9 years old, suffered numerous injuries.

I read that earlier today. What a cute dog, too bad it had to die. But a real hero he was.

Have you ever seen a pit bull? Muscular dogs with a very powerful bite. And Jack Russells are small. George went up against two. I'm not surprised at all he was beyond mere stitching up.

Terriers are aggressive little dogs. Pit Bulls are big, powerful terriers. There ya go.

I'm not a fan of owning pit bulls. Whether it's the dog or the owner, something always seems to occur with pit bulls.

I strongly support a complete ban on some dog breeds for private ownership, pit bulls are definitely up there. Great job by the terrier though

The type of people who get pit bulls (or rather the irresponsible subset of them that causes problems) will just switch to another breed they think are "badass" and the same sort of **** will happen.

I'm not convinced that it's just the owners that cause the problems. I definitely have an anti-dog bias, but I'm inclined to believe that pit bulls are a breed that's more likely to attack - or, at the very least, takes more effort to teach not to attack.

Then again, I also support banning several similar breeds, muscular strong dogs. And I certainly wish people paid attention to the effing laws regarding dogs in public places (might only be a local problem for me though).

Of course the breed has something to do with it. I'm just saying that, ultimately, it comes down to people. First, because owners are still responsible for the behavior of their dog. Second, because dog breeds are the result of human tinkering in the first place.

If it wasn't pit bulls it would be something else.

It comes down to people, but how sure can you be that a human can prevent a specific dog from being aggressive, for sure? I'm not sure. I know some people who own large, potentially dangerous dogs. I trust that these people have given the dog their full attention and try to ensure it won't be aggressive. But with breeds like Rottweilers, I'm just never sure that it's enough.

I still don't get why dangerous breeds aren't universally banned. Basically, it means that animals which an average adult couldn't protect themselves against are allowed to be present in public places, on the mere assumption that their owners are able to control them - even when we're talking about animals with a hunting instinct. Surprising.
