      • War Games came on Netflix and I got to watch it. A pretty decent movie, and one that technologically manages to hold up pretty well even today.

It was interesting watching the old style computers communicating with the modems where you physically put the phone down on a microphone plate. Apart from that, though, they did a good job of making the "War Room" convincing without relying too much on obsolescent computer graphics.

The moral of the story was similar to Dr. Strangelove, though I do wonder why the computer took so long to arrive at its conclusion. Surely if it had been patiently calculating all its moves in advance for X number of hours, it would have arrived at this conclusion, without having to cram all those calculations dramatically into a few seconds of screentime at the end?

Decent enough, but still watch Dr. Strangelove as well.

Oh no doubt; it's more of a DDL vehicle for its own sake than a film, not that that's a bad thing. It's why he's been sweeping every best actor award out there but best picture has remained elusive.

                      • I saw the three X-men movies earlier this week. Great fun.

Now, as a result, I'm wading through the old X-men animated series from the 90s. One never grows too old.

                        • Yah, I recently saw I Am Legend and didn't like it. At the very end of the movie right after the resolution scene, a guy behind me said "I don't get it" and everybody laughed hard.

Also, Sweeney Todd was pretty lacklustre, just like Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory before it. Now, I like my fake Photochopped Johnny Depp porn as much as the next girl but there's a fine line between whimsical genius and weirdness-just-for-weirdness'-sake. Tim Burton crossed that line a long time ago and has been trying to find his way back ever since.

                          • I saw "There will be blood" yesterday. What a movie! Daniel Day Lewis is outstanding in his portrayal of a man slowly sinking into madness. It's an achievment of of director PT Anderson to have such an unlikeable but complex character and make the audience feel for him in a way. I dare say this is PT Andersons best movie so far.

"No Country for Old Men" was also quite good, I missed some of the dialogue though due to the often mumbled texan accents... Not my favourite Cohen Bros movie, but still good.

I tried to watch "Jumper" last night, but the quality was so bad I gave up after 5 minutes...

For some unknown reason I also saw "Rambo IV" recently... I don't know what I expected but what I got was 80 minutes of pornographic violence of the sort I thought we buried with the 80's. People doing stupid things without reason and a minimum of dialogue and character development to not take the focus away from the killing...

                            • I watched "Will Be Blood" recently and liked it too. The film is quite minimalistic - there doesn't seem to be a single unnecessary line of dialog or any "padding" musical effect.

I liked the antagonism between the preacher and Plainview. Normally I don't like those preachy types, but this particular guy was complex enough to keep me wondering what the best of him and the worst of him could be. The confrontation at the end left all sorts of questions about the past unanswered... was the preacher really a hypocrite and sinner? Or in his puritanical sense of morality, maybe his sense of terrible sin was actually only minor or economic wrongdoings, like putting his church into debt.

                              • I thought the opening parts of that conversation showed him to be a hypocrite, but you're right that it could have been the result of duress. It's hard to tell.
