    • I watched Reign Over Me last night.

Adam Sandler was actually pretty good in the movie.

      Don Cheadle was Don Cheadle.

Russian film about the Afghan war during the end of the SU. Much slower than a Hollywood film, but I liked it.

I saw that. It left me in two minds. I really liked the period setting - during the collaborationist Shanghai Wang Jingwei government which colluded with the Japanese army. It had a good wistful portrayal of "swinging Shanghai" and the sort of cosmopolitan place that coastline China was, briefly, between Imperial and Communist rule.

The storyline left me cold though. I guess it's a welcome change from the usual story where "good guys take all", but at the same time the character development between the female assassin and the government collaborator didn't strike me as particularly insightful. They meet, they make love graphically, they leave. The scene at the jeweler's shop could have worked if there had been more emotional investment between them, but as it was the character development felt a little half-baked.

It also was never entirely convincing to me how they were able to expertly "fake" their Hong Kong personalities to try to get him there either.

Maybe I'll change my mind later, but I can't see a major flaw in the movie. I liked the the storyline, it wasn't boring. Now as for character development, I think that it was well done and well acted. Their relation is very ambiguous, at least from her perspective. She describes it very well in that scene with her older boss in the Resistance. She hates him, but she also loves (?) or at least is very attracted to him. And she feels that she's traitor for doing so. What complicates matters is that its really hard to say what she really feels or think, since she's supposedly a very talented actress. She claims to hate what he does to her, but she seems to love it secretly, but feels ashamed of herself. That said, I saw it in Chinese with French subtitles, so maybe I missed a thing or two.
