Teaching is pretty much verbatum from the book

Test is on Chapters 6 and 7

Test is "Open Note"

You copy chapters 6 and 7 declaring them as your notes.

Is that cheating? Hell, is that even teaching?

I have no idea what an "open note" test means... but it's cheating, and it's fine to cheat. It's cheating because you're declaring something that isn't your notes to be. So it's technically cheating, but not morally.

And it certainly isn't teaching. Teachers who go ahead reading their lectures verbatim from a book don't deserve the wage they're being paid.

If you copy the book, maybe you'll end up remembering. That's pretty much what the goal of the class would seem to be geared towards accomplishing.

No, it would make them a copyright violation . Seriously, it's a philological discussion, but one could say that copying the chapters verbatim doesn't match the dictionary definition of notes, seeing how most definitions say that notes are "brief", for example.

It is actually quite clever to note down critical stuff immediately rather than swallowing it

Notes have to be your own work, not copied. The idea is that forming effective notes aids learning.

While I manage to understand professors now, I still haven't learned to take proper notes in class over here.

Probably never will due to the fact that it's just 4-5 more weeks of class.
