Sandpaper is my advice too... or the really cheapo way, scuff them on sidewalk.

Actually if I have no sandpaper handy, I used the sidewalk too.
I wear gym shoes at work, unless a client is in town.
You don't have to scuff them much with the sand paper, just enough to get through the shellack in the center of the sole. It will do it on it's own through normal wear after that.
I wear dress shoes to social functions where the ladies can notice. (of course, being married, it's not as much fun as it used to be, but it's still good not to be considered a geeky slob)It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit.
