Alien is hugely overrated; once you get past the cool set/monster design, it has the same trite plot structure as a slasher film. Aliens had heft -- and a much cooler climax.

Well I was under the wrong impression. Research reveals that it was a character called Kane who got sucked up and he was played by John Hurt. Must have mixed up the actors when I saw the movie, Skerrit plays the Nostromo's commander and has an Abba-look that's much more similar to his later appearance.
Certainly not Henriksen though. Speaking of this one, anyone watched that show Millennium?
Maybe because it was directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, etc...)?
And I liked them all very much. But Aliens (the extended version that is...) is the best one. It combines drama, kick ass action and horror in a way that has yet to be beaten. Nothing made in the last 20 years has even come close to the excellence of this movie.

I think Alien, like most horror films, is probably much better if you don't know what's going to happen next. Unfortunately, many of its best scenes (like the alien bursting from John Hurt's chest) have become so iconic that anyone watching today has already had the best parts of the movie spoiled for them.

I don't think I've seen any of these, does that make me special?

I voted Aliens, as it's more of an action film. Alien would be next. I've seen the others, but they're not even in consideration.
When I was a kid, Alien came out just before I went to summer camp. I hadn't seen it, but we had a great time acting out the chest-burster routine after eating the crappy food.

The original was the best. I probably saw it 5 times at the movie theatre when it first came out (and have seen it many many more times since). Gigers vision and art is awesome. I liked the subsequent movies but none of them reached the zenith of the original. My only complaint is that they excluded the human to egg metamorphosis from Gigers version of the alien lifecycle. IMO it was a superior concept to the 'female alien' that arrives in the second movie (without Giger).
Both one and two were totally different movies.
Alien was a classic "got ya" flick... and it was indeed a good one. It beats the heck out of most slasher films.
Aliens was a classic "shoot em up" flick. And again, it was indeed a good one.
I liked them both about equally. However, since much of the first movie is based on surprise, Aliens stands up to repeat viewings far better than the Alien.
I didn't mind 3 or 4, they were entertaining, but not even in the same league as 1 and 2.
Keep on Civin'
