Fortunately you're no longer a teacher and not harming any other students than you already did.

What's wrong with making fun of people...better to have a small hit in high school rather than not be able to take real criticism in college and the job world.

What Im waiting for is how this kid went through the Fairfax County Public Schools without anyone realizing that a kid with no friends, who never talked, needed help.

Perhaps because his grades were good? Helped boost the SOL scores? No Child Left Behind, indeed.

When are public schools going to remember theres a whole child there?

I was an outcast in junior high and high school; people either treated me like sh!t or ignored me. But I did have at least two friends during this time in my life.

You should have hung out with the stoners. They take anyone as long as you have weed.

we're not talking behavior issues. We're talking in this case (if its true) about reading. Or, in cases I know of, a kid bringing in homework late.

We're talking about a court that did in fact judge him to be an imminent threat to himself and others and incapable of volunteering for treatment yet stupidly decided to go for outpatient treatment.

Its not clear thats what happened. The WSJ piece makes no ref to a court. It does say he was commited, than released. Without knowing the details its hard to say. Do you think everyone who is committed should not be released, regardless of what they are like when in commitment? Or are you just angry the mental health pros dont have 20/20 foresight.

Yeah, not only is that mean, but it's also a very good way to keep a child from reading.

I'm angry about several things. I'm angry VA didn't follow Federal law and report Cho's certification as being mentally ill by the court to the FBI so he wouldn't have been able to buy his weapons legally. I'm angry that the Court who described Cho as being and I quote "an imminent danger to self or others as a result of mental illness, or is so seriously mentally ill as to be substantially unable to care for self, and is incapable of volunteering or unwilling to volunteer for treatment" was not involuntarially committed and only given outpatient treatment. I'm angry the college even let him stay after setting fire to his dorm room forget pressing charges.

from the article you linked to
"Police "took [Cho] away to the counseling center for a night or two," "

How does one spend a night or two in outpatient treatment?

As a result of Crouse's exam, Judge Paul Barnett concluded that Cho "presents an imminent danger to himself as a result of mental illness," but that an involuntary hospitalization was deemed "unsuitable." Instead, Barnett recommended that outpatient treatment was warranted.

No, you should be involuntarily commited by the state, isnt that clear? Because you have expressed suicidal thoughts. If after two nights in "outpatient" care, the shrinks determine to the best of their ability that youre not likely to off yourself, they should hold you anyway, unless they are SURE that you wont do something like this. Afterall, whats a thousand people involuntarilly in mental institutions, if it avoids 30 killings? (honestly I dont know the answer, i just want to think it through) Would we save more lives commiting 10 thousand of the borderline suicidal, or 10 thousand of the borderline jihadists? Or banning large capacity ammo clips? Or taxing ourselves to provide better mental health services in public schools?

All present freedom vs safety tradeoffs. which are never easy.
