Its not clear thats what happened. The WSJ piece makes no ref to a court. It does say he was commited, than released. Without knowing the details its hard to say. I'm angry VA didn't follow Federal law and report Cho's certification as being mentally ill by the court to the FBI so he wouldn't have been able to buy his weapons legally. I'm angry that the Court who described Cho as being and I quote "an imminent danger to self or others as a result of mental illness, or is so seriously mentally ill as to be substantially unable to care for self, and is incapable of volunteering or unwilling to volunteer for treatment" was not involuntarially committed and only given outpatient treatment. No, you should be involuntarily commited by the state, isnt that clear? Because you have expressed suicidal thoughts. If after two nights in "outpatient" care, the shrinks determine to the best of their ability that youre not likely to off yourself, they should hold you anyway, unless they are SURE that you wont do something like this. Afterall, whats a thousand people involuntarilly in mental institutions, if it avoids 30 killings? (honestly I dont know the answer, i just want to think it through) Would we save more lives commiting 10 thousand of the borderline suicidal, or 10 thousand of the borderline jihadists?
