  • Why do people go to the gym but then only do cardio?

Seems a bit pointless - a marathon runner's build isn't exactly something to aspire to...

To be fair, muscle freaks look pretty fugly.

LS, for instance, has too much. Makes him look goonish and clearly compensating for a tiny hindu pecker.

But there is a massive difference between carrying an extra 20lbs of muscle with symmetry and the guys that win bodybuilding contests.

There's also a massive difference between people who do cardio to stay in shape and those looking for a marathon runner's build.

Most people go to the gym to lose weight, they could care less about gaining mass of any kind.

And I think the normal progression would be to lose the extra pounds, and then try and put some good extra ones on. Though people underestimate how much fat you can lose lifting.

The weight room is also intimidating for people who haven't used it before. There aren't any marathon winners using the treadmill, there are some pretty buff dudes in the weight room.

It's intimidating even when you've lifted for three years

If you're looking to lose fat, you've got to incorporate resistance. If you're looking to lose weight (fat and muscle), then go ahead and do all the cardio you want, but the muscle you lose will slow your metabolism.

cardio is good for the heart. hence, the name.

maybe they don't want to drop dead from heart attacks.

because if you fall down in the gym, its a lot easier to go home and not have to walk all the way back.

That's why i go. Besides, i'm there @ lunch time, so i only have time for cardio. That's what gives the best return for the time i'm there.

I'd prefer to burn a calorie from fat than a calorie from muscle.

Most people on the treadmill I see don't have much muscle to lose that way. When I gained pounds on deployment I quickly lost the weight by running, and then a month in the weight room and I had whatever muscle I lost running back.

The thing is, weights help shed weight much better than cardio does.
