I need to have at least MS .NET framework 2.0 installed in order to play Never Winter Nights 2 but I'm having trouble getting .Net installed on Vista. I downloaded MS .NET 3.0, which is the latest version, but when I go to install it I get a message saying I must have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed on my computer for the .NET framework to work. WTF? I'm using Vista and not XP. Isn't Vista .NET compatible? Is there a new Vista version of the dot net software?

I found this and am still reading it and trying to make sense of it.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

More weirdness. I downloaded a copy of d3dx9_30.dll (the file it said I was missing; which I assume is part of .NET 2.0) and got the game working. The weird part is now I can't see my character or any NPCs in NWN2 when it sure worked fine on my old XP machine.
I went to the NWN2 official forums and found some advice for getting the game to work with Vista which called for right clicking on the .exe file, going to properties, then the Compatibility tab, and selecting:
Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition
This resulted in no noticable changes. Still can't see my character or any of the NPCs in the game. Strange.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Windows Vista comes with .NET 3.0, which is backwards compatible with 2.0 and 1.1 and 1.0.
The NWN error is because the developers didn't follow the Windows Guidelines, apparently."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

More of a victim of the game developers, who apparently do not follow guidelines.
When you change the fundamental pillars of your operating system, games relying on quirks in the old systems will not work without being fixed."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Erm, you mean "games relying on how the old system worked"? Given that a lot of games have trouble with Vista, perhaps it's not all 'odd quirks'<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

A lot of developers -- game developers in particular -- rely on quirky behaviour to accomplish something out of laziness."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Or perhaps to accomplish things that can't be accomplished within the approved guidelines?
Not to say that some devs (er, maybe most) aren't occasionally lazyBut I doubt either of us know enough of the details to know whether this is simple laziness or if some of the guidelines eliminate important avenues of programming.

Mostly it's just laziness. SMAC had a basic, awful, unsupported check for OSes, for example."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Y'all sound like you're talking about Civ 3 and their initial 75 mb patch, the worthless bastards.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Well, NWN2 has been out for a while now (up to 6 months) and they've said they're not going to be releasing any more patches. I wanted to try the last patch out and see if they've fixed any more bugs and optimized the code any more but I'm not sure I'll get the chance without setting up a dual boot with XP option. Is that even possible with Vista?Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

I tried to reinstall but Vista wouldn't even let me do that for some reason. When I get home I'll try to reinstall one last time and if that doesn't work then I'll give up until the expansion pack comes out in a few months.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.
