Savings go real fast in the city, when you have a family and there's a chance of a second career. Planning ahead.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
Where do you work?! Isn't this like your second year out of college?! That's some impressive dough you must be earning!
Apparently, being a good BSer gets one promoted quickly in the world of strategy con-sulting
But I don't spend all that much - I don't own a car, I buy groceries in bulk, go to work late and work past 7 (thereby being able to expense nice restaurant meals to my clients), know bouncers/promoters/club owners (saving on cover, table service, etc.). My only big recurring expense is rent. When I make one-off big purchases, my savings for that month falls correspondingly (sometimes below zero, like when I bought my TV, computer parts and home theatre system in a single month).
Of course, no wife, kids, or girlfriends to leach off me. The one-night stands don't cost more than a couple of drinks and maybe some eggs for breakfast, if that

thing is you never know when you are going to die. You need money to retire on. Social security will be broke by the time I reach retirement age.
Bah! Even if nothing changes, the worst-case scenario is that in, when the baby boomers hit 65, benefits will have to be cut to 80% until the glut of retirees dies off.
But on the other hand, Social Security doesn't pay squat to begin with.
On the third hand, if the Repugs manage to "privatize" it and allow younger workers to put their money elsewhere, Social Security will be "broke" next year.
'only'. Many would consider such a comment rather derogatory. Just so you know.
Why derogatory if he was speaking about himself. It does imply that he considers it an inadequate sum so are you trying to say that others that earn less than this sum could be insulted ??

Nooo, not only in the context of it not being enough generally, only in the context of:
Next year I'll aim to save £500 a month, but I can't quite see that happening. Especially considering after tax/NI/student loan...
What I mean is that earning that much, it's quite hard to save £500 a month. Also in the context of Shiva's post I was quoting, about him saving $2-2.5k a month, and me wondering how much he must be earning to be able to do that. There was also something of an illusion towards a rant abou tax. Like an "I'm happy about what I earn before tax, but after tax it's only...".
I'm very happy about what I'll be earning, it's just a) not enough to comfortable save £500 a month; b) a lot less than Shiva must be earning; and c) a lot less than it is before tax. They're the reasons the "only" was there, nothing about me not thinking I'm being paid enough, not any derogatory intention.

Yeah that's an OK wage that Drogue, perhaps slightly above national average?
Yep, reasonably so The national average take home (if paying off student loan) is £1356 a month (£22411 gross a year).

To say that one 'only' gets more than national average as a first real time job may not be taken too well as an attitude from the perspective of the average person.
It's a bit like saying I can 'only' afford a BMW and not a Ferrarri. Not to be taken well by those who can 'only' afford a Mini or less. It's a presentation issue, not a fundamentals point.

In context of LS that's fine, just be wary about saying 'only' to people who may not be as financially capable as you. You may find such comments a bit of a faux pas outside of the circles you are used to.
