A traditional club is also a useful tool for travelling across unstable ice pans where you usually don't want to be pulling yourself over an ice ridge using a rifle
Also there is far less danger of an accident to the sealers (or the protesters
Finally, with guns there may be a temtation to shoot at a seal at something other than extremely close range-- This increases the chance of a non-fatal injury and increased suffering.
A blow from a club is immediate and extremely effective.
The only advantage that shooting has is that a man with a gun is seen somehow as normal while a man with a club is somehow seen as barbaric.

As Flubber pointed out, bullets also would have people take shots they shouldn't from a distance.
But bullets cost money. Not to mention rifles.
Other than that, you don't want to be potting off seals that you never recover. The hakapik (spiked club) requires a close up encounter. If you are close enough to hit it with a spiked club, you are unlikely to lose the seal to the ocean.(\__/)

No diffrence in killing seals, cows, sheep, pigs or whales. Anyone who critizises that is a hypocryte if he wears leather or eats meat. Factory farming is foul though and should be opposed
