When I lived in Newfoundland we would have one every 10 years or so when persistent onshore winds bunches the pack ice to the coast. I think the thickness of the ice pack is greater than usual but this is not that unknown a weather phenomenon


Hunting seals correctly is no more or less barbaric than the slaughter of beef, chicken, pigs and is arguably less barbaric than game hunting. The sealers attempt to sell all of the animal. The pelt and oils are prized but markets have also been found for seal meat and even the remains can be used for things like fertilizers or pet foods

Localized ice increases may be because things are cooler than usual (localized freezing) or warmer (greater calving of icebergs, ice sheets and bergy bits creates a bigger pack)

IMHO anyone that eats meat or wears leather has nothing to say here. The science is that a single blow kills a seal instantly and that it is every bit as humane as alternative methods. If you accept the harvest of animals for food and clothing . .. that is EXACTLY what this is.

THe curbing the population reason is just a secondary reason as the hope is the reduction in seal population might help the fisheries recover

The only reason this is an issue is that pictures of bleeding whitecoats from 20 years ago are still used to enrage stupid celebrities and uninformed populations. They don't show the seals that are killed nowadays since they are not as cute

I think the conclusion is clear.

It is the patriotic duty of every Canadian to drive an SUV, invest in coal using power companies, and burn as much wood as possible to replace heating from hydro and nuclear.
