    I pay through my teeth for my 1BR near Dupont (21st & M), and it's worth every penny.

    Though I would think that proximity to bars in Dupont, Adams Morgan, and Georgetown probably isn't at the top of your list of priorities

                  In the UK, the average is around 35% (net of tax, gross of everything else). Mine's likely to be around that, perhaps 40%. Bearing in mind that's for a room. not for my own place, and I'll earn a little way above the average salary (though not much). As a student it's around 50% atm.

                          I'd imagine they don't. Washington isn't a huge, so commuting from a bit out doesn't seem too bad. The issue seems relatively simple - there are many people who want to live in central DC, and not many places for them to live. Which means places get smaller and prices rocket.
