Last time I looked, some parts of NW/upper NW weren't crazy (the revived neighborhoods downtown is where it's craziest), but that may have changed.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

~9.5% of gross*, though that is due to rise considerably (to about 20%) in the near future.

          * - like many mortgages, ours includes escrow for property tax & homeowners insurance.

About 28% of net pay (18% of gross).

Wheer are we talking about? Friendship Heights? Van Ness? U Street? Those would all work. But I confess, I'd love to be in the revived downtown; Chinatown in particular would rock. I just don't see it happening on a bureaucrat's salary, though.

Of take-home pay (since some of you don't seem to understand what net and gross are), a swiftly calculated 13.75%

Seems highly unlikely. Don't think anybody would write a loan at that percentage.

I'm sure there are some for whom rent is 60% of their take-home pay, but I rather doubt that's the figure for the entire USA.
