Firstly, the concept of Macedonia isn't merely restricted to an ethnic one, or an ancient regional one. "Macedonia" is also the name given to an area of land retained by the Ottoman Empire after the Treaty of Berlin in 1878 (?), which the current Republic of Macedonia now holds in part.

Secondly, it seems reasonable to allow states to refer to themselves as they wish to be called and recognize their wishes in this matter. If the Greeks have specific complaints about the appropriation of their cultural identity by the modern Slavic Macedonians, let them voice them (they have) - but don't contest the name merely because, to certain Greek nationalists, it implies appropriation.

Let's be sensible about this and drop the "FYROM" nonsense. "Greek identity" will not be destroyed because a state of two million people is recognized as "the Republic of Macedonia" instead of some bizarre acronym.
    Lime roots and treachery!

the football thing is a historical anomaly which although it pains me to say it should be abolished.

It would mean the scots going independant within a week though so we would be back to normal.

(the welsh football team is irelevant)

Exactly, Scotland is going to break the Union anyway, so Poly is just being ahead of the game.

Should be illegal to use a flag representing any place other than from where you register. That means, no United Nations flag.

If I were a greek from Tesalonika I would never ever call fyromians macedonians..
the ancient Phillistines didnt speak Arabic. Neither did the ancient Egyptians.

Ghana is in the wrong place.

And historically, for quite some time, Salonika had a Sephardic Jewish majority, Ladino speaking and Ottoman loyal.

The heart of Macedonia is Jewish!!!!

And modern-day Belgians aren't proper Celts. They even got the nerve to appropriate Ambiorix.

and much of Flanders is in France, right? Maybe France should object to the name of the Belgian region, implying, as it does, a claim on French territory.

Oh, and most Britons are celts either, and THEIR name ALSO implies a claim on French territory.

"FYROM" stands as a rather amusing testimony to Greek insecurity and whininess.

I don't about the French, but I adamantly object to calling my beloved homecity 'Flemish'.

But they changed their constitution. So that Macedonia is NOW the name of a country without territorial claims.

"Syria" also "always" came with claims to Greater Syria. "Egypt" came with claims to the Sudan. "Israel" could imply claims to southern Lebanon, and NW Jordan (not to mention the Pal territories) Hell, "America" implies claims to the whole hemisphere.
All of which claims have had substantantial political support at various times, including semi-official support in some cases.
