Firstly, the concept of Macedonia isn't merely restricted to an ethnic one, or an ancient regional one. "Macedonia" is also the name given to an area of land retained by the Ottoman Empire after the Treaty of Berlin in 1878 (?), which the current Republic of Macedonia now holds in part.
Secondly, it seems reasonable to allow states to refer to themselves as they wish to be called and recognize their wishes in this matter. If the Greeks have specific complaints about the appropriation of their cultural identity by the modern Slavic Macedonians, let them voice them (they have) - but don't contest the name merely because, to certain Greek nationalists, it implies appropriation.
Let's be sensible about this and drop the "FYROM" nonsense. "Greek identity" will not be destroyed because a state of two million people is recognized as "the Republic of Macedonia" instead of some bizarre acronym.
