    Americans: Which Presidents from the other party do you admire?

    I have to say as time goes on I'm admiring Bush 41 more and more. He was basically a stand up guy who was willing to take a hit on his own personal career in order to do what was best for the country. Eisenhower was also straight forward and honest plus his criticism of the influence defense contractors have on the budget seems spot on.

    I'd include Lincoln on this list though the reality is his Republican Party has nothing to do with the current one other then the name. So what about you? Which leaders from the other side do you admire?

    What's your problem with Bush again? It can't be anything to do with a lack of respect for civil rights or the US Constitution.

          Lincoln -- except he tended to trample on civil rights.
          Johnson -- his impeachment was a sham
          Teddy Roosevelt - Trust buster.
          Ike -- except he didn't slap Joe McCarthy down.
          Ford -- an honest politician

              Kennedy... but to be honest, I admire all presidents. To get to that position requires a lot of dedication, political and social clout, as well as money. All of which I do not have.

                  A. Johnson ran as Lincoln's VP, but he was a Democrat before and after the war.

                      He was Lincoln's VP. The radical Republicans went after him following the civil war because he embraced Lincoln's "malice towards none and charity for all" philosophy.

                          James K. Polk is tough to top. Likewise Jefferson, if you identify him as a Democrat.

                              Yeah, Andrew Johnson ran as Lincoln's VP in 1864. The Republicans in the North needed a Democratic face on the ticket to gain wider support, or else Lincoln might have lost reelection. Technically they ran under the name "National Union Party".
