If only..

The fashionable small knit kippahs dont cover it all that well. And Ive steadily gone from one bobby pin will do, to two bobby pins, to "QOTM, do you have one of those big hairclip thingies"

At this stage Im thinking of getting one of those big funky colorful caps that jews from the "East" wear, but QOTM thinks they look too hippyish.

From what I can gather, the wealthy Jews tend to be supportive of their community, so that being Jewish means you can get a lot of freebies, for studies, travel, and even business.

nope. Some courses and educational travel are subsidized, but its almost never free. Only free travel I know of is the Taglit program, for high school age teens to go Israel. I dont think even that covers airfare. I dont really know the details, but Im intent on learning them.


OTOH Jewish day schools are often less expensive than other private schools. But then they also typically have larger class sizes, etc. Oh, and they hit the parents up for donations.

Subsidies to businesses that I know of are only for poor Jews, mainly immigrants, and are in the forms of low interest loans. And its pretty community specific, I think.

I have her book on sephardic jewish cooking. QOTM and I have used a couple of the recipes, notably the one for grape leaves. And the descriptions of the communities, and the relationships of the food customs to the community histories, make it a good book to read even if youre not hungry.

I'm basing my observations on the Montreal Jewish community. There are lots of Jewish-only scholarships, subsidized programs for young people to go to say, Israel. From my experience working in a large stockbroker's office, I can see that the Jewish high-ups were definitely willing to use their influence to help other people of the Jewish community with business opportunities.
