  • And future generations will have fewer children.
And as stated. I've put more into SS than it would have cost to cover my retirement. It will probably cover at least 3 peoples retirement. SO I think I should be able to enjoy retirement without feeling guilty. I've worked for over 40 years straight and figure after another 5 or so, I deserve a little rest. After you've worked for 45 years to raise a family, you can judge me.
I also expected SS to be screwed up before I could benefit and have made other plans. All I'm hoping is for SS to supplement it a touch.

Forsight, Planning, execution of the plan.
Things that made our generation great

Your generation should try it. It's quite successful.

    • And the comments that we spent more money on ourselves. I have to laugh.
I don't remember having a car when I was in HS. Now kids expect it as right. If they don't have an ipod and a cell phone, they whine whine whine. Granted those thing didn't exist for us but my dad would have thwacked us if we even thought we were entitled to such things.

That's the attitude of the next generation. Entitled.
SO saying that we were a greedy generation is laughable.
But if that's what it take for you to feel good about yourself. Fine, we're used to sacraficing for our children.

So true... if we wanted something, we were told to go out and earn the money ourselves. We didn't expect it to be handed to us. The current generation thinks they have the right to have all these things, and that they should be handed to them.

So I laugh at many of the comments here. Yeah, we were big into material things... but we went out and earned them. We didn't whine that they should be handed to us

        • Why are people getting so pissy?

I don't think anyone has blamed that baby boomers need to get out their money. If you have to pay for it, you damn well need to get it out as promised earlier, a deal is a deal.

If you'd just change the deal retroactively now and say, well you get only some out, well.. what is that saying about the future of Gen X? SO how much are we going to get out? Nothing? There's a certain level of trust we need to have on ourselves and the state, this is something we need to keep running or we're kidding ourselves, when the trust is gone, man, it'll be crazy.

It will be benefitial to keep the trust. We need that or chaos will come. Naturally I don't trust my leaders to be able to handle even a broom so I'll be investing my savings and take care of that the other way.

The expenses must be covered, I don't think anyone is saying it shouldn't be covered.

AND Gen X hasn't exactly had the chance to show what we're capable of yet

            I think you're confusing gen y with gen x

I got my first car at 24, and my first cell phone at the same time. iPods didn't exist until I was ~20, and I'm at the young end of gen X

              • I got my first car at 17, a 1984 Toyota Celica for $1300. Worked like a slave all summer to afford it. I didn't have a cell phone untill I was 21, and I payed for it. We are not all riding on someone's coat tails.

I still don't own an iPod.

                • No, my daughter is turning 20 this year so that's my current experience. Most of the kids I know in their 20's are still living at home working and soaking off their parents.

And yes, I don't want to make too much of a generalization because there are quite a few younger hard workers that don't expect everything handed to them. We have some good kids at work that I'm proud of the effort and desire that they show.
And I doubt I would be so defensive if the name of the thread wasn't so imflamatory and the early quotes insulting our generation deserved some type of response.

And cross generation arguement are always quite entertaining. The younger generation always *****ing and saying they'll do better. And the older generation claiming experience and wisdom and saying the younger generation has it easier than they did.
This has been going on since the beginning of time and not likely to change in the future. Our revenge will be when your children grow up and start the same crap. But we'll be dead and not care.

I respect that. More than you can know.

                      • Also, show me a person in here (Finland) who gets a car from their parents after they graduate, and I'll show you a person who .. doesn't exist.

Also show me a person who didn't work for their stuff, and I'll show you a person who never will get a job in the future either. That is, the rich people in here count as... 9 people.

The real difference is, we have to pay double the taxes . So they have to work a lot harder to get anything!

The Gen X is also facing a situation where the pressure is on. You either get to the top or you stay down. That is, the competition is stronger by the day.

                          • So by this I mean it's regional.

However, I'm a bit worried about the Euro Gen X. We have no strong identity, we have been pussified by baby booming activists, so we're in for a real fight later on. We're definitely not united, we don't know each other, and we just give into this new age ideologies of peace and happiness and evil Amerika, I think it will bite our ass at the end, and we definitely are not strong enough.

We are not going to make any big decisions, any decisions that takes balls. So, we are defeating the purpose of our status and will lose it to Asia or something.

Then again, I don't care. It is well deserved after all this stagnation and not taking any direction. And I'll be enjoying my lovely house and life in SoCal and the beach anyway so screw Europe, I don't care.

I live at my parents place, it's the only way I can save enough to afford to buy a place. The kind of place that is sensible to live in for practical purposes start at around $350,000. $400,000 is closer to the real price that I have to look at. The average age of first time buyers is now in the early-mid 30s as a sign of these kinds of problems.

If your daughter is living to mooch, it's probably her upbringing.

It was the boomers who were the anomaly generation that started that trend. Prior to that kids lived at home in extended families until they got married.

Much lower rates of college education/participation and the like. Those like my father who predated the boomers and decided the college route put themselves through college. Those like myself who post dated the boomers did likewise.
