Oh, and another thing - why do you assume that the place of the housewife is somehow intrinsically inferior? Unless you get over this prejudice, no reasonable discussion is possible without us constantly returning to this again and again.

As I said, among my peers in my socio-economic bracket, women are equal.

Why am I inferior to the person I work for? Because he has the money!

A mere recognition of differences is not a mandate to discriminate.

Keep digging the hole. I was under the assumption that being human was to not be like animals. Our society itself is anthetical to "inherent" characteristics. So why in this sphere, should genders be relegated to their "inherent differences", if they even have a substantial occurance (and isn't just the product of societal or cultural norms)?

I doubt that. Only as you define equality I'm sure.

A simple inherent difference - men have penises. Women do not.

More generally, are you trying to tell me that there are no significant differences in the brain wirings of men and women, and that men and women do not have differences in certain abilities when considered in statistically significant numbers?

I repeat - a recognition of differences is not a mandate to discriminate.

That's not really a valid argument, you know.

                    • Aneeshm,

If women really are "naturally" better at being barefoot & pregnant in the kitchen nuturing, etc., then in a truely open society that respects everyone's choices, women will freely chose to be housewives, and you'll be a happy camper.

Surely you are not asserting that India, today, is such a society? If you are, I shall have to mock you another time.

But "recognition of differences" is the refuge of those who defend the discrimination of old.

Except I think that he does not want women to be exposed to any liberation ideology. That's the truly amazing part.

Most probably yes. But that cannot happen as long as feminists continue stigmatising the housewife, and (irony of ironies) treating the traditionally male bastions as superior.

I am not asserting that India is such a society. I am asserting, however, that it should aspire to be.

But I, not defending those discriminations, and having risen above them, can recognise them without prejudice.
