You are talking about the lack of fathers not families. You can still have a father even though your mother and father get a divorce. In a lot of cases children without fathers never had one. The father was never there in the first place, not as a father except for the initial act anyway.

Again, why is it important for women to be dependent on men for children to be raised right.

Most people in the 50s found the idea that a wife was lesser than and submissive to the husband to be pretty self-explanatory. Few would have been able to articulate why that was so, in a manner other than "that's the way things should be" or "that's just how women are."
