I think the guy was looking at the long term and not just in the next few years. Rabbits have a gestation period of 31 days and a female can get pregnant 24 hours after having a litter. A female has 5-9 babies per litter and a rabbit becomes sexually mature in 5 months.

I'm not going to do that math but 11 litters of 7 babies on average per year per female and you end up with a crap load of rabbits in a short period of time.

Figuring there were six females, that is 462 rabbits a year! After five years that is over 2000 plus you already have more rabbits to breed with!

Ok, let me try again. When you convert when from of energy to another form of energy, you inevitably get an energy loss. To use a given amount of acreage to produce feeder for livestock will provide less nutritation to the population than by using the acreage to grow crops for human consumption. You could make an exception for unarable land, but unfortunate as it is, rabbits are just not kept on rocky pastures.

It's actually more since after five months the first litter would become sexually mature then the next every month. That means you're adding breeding females from months 5-12. We're talking exponential growth here.

77 x 6 = 462 but that's only the offspring of the first 6 females. There will be a LOT more females breeding then just those 6.
