An article that seems more informative:

    Schools axe controversial subjects

    Press Association
    Sunday April 1, 2007 11:08 AM

Schools are dropping controversial subjects from history lessons - such as the Holocaust and the Crusades - because teachers do not want to cause offence, Government research has found.

The way the slave trade is taught can lead white children - as well as black pupils - to feel alienated, according to the study by the Historical Association.

And a lack of factual knowledge among teachers, particularly in primary schools, is leading to "shallow" lessons on emotive and difficult subjects.

Some teachers have even dropped the Holocaust completely from lessons over fears that Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic reactions in class.

And one school avoided teaching the Crusades because its "balanced" handling of the topic would directly contradict what was taught in local mosques.

The report, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, said: "Teachers and schools avoid emotive and controversial history for a variety of reasons, some of which are well-intentioned.

"Staff may wish to avoid causing offence or appearing insensitive to individuals or groups in their classes.

"In particular settings, teachers of history are unwilling to challenge highly contentious or charged versions of history in which pupils are steeped at home, in their community or in a place of worship."

The researchers gave the example of one history department in a secondary school in a northern city which decided not to teach the Holocaust as a topic for GCSE coursework.

The report said the teachers feared confronting "anti-Semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial among some Muslim pupils". Christian parents at another school complained over the way the Arab-Israeli conflict was taught.

Your article doesn't put it in a much better light, IMO.

          I agree.

It only has the benefit of conveying actual (worrisome) info, rather than hysteria.

It is true that some techers gave up on teaching the holocaust, which is a bad thing.

The thread's title isn't ture however, British schools don't forbid teachers from teaching about the holocaust: some teachers took it upon themselves.

I think it is a very bad idea. The only way to fight antisemitism, as well as any other kind of racism, is to expose the horrors that happen when those logics are taken too far.

Over here, holocaust survivors often go to schools to explain how it was in the camps. The classes tend to be fascinated when it happens, even in classes that would be deemed "sensistive".

The teachers who don't talk about the holocaust, just let their students further reinforce their bigotry

As an anecdote, I recently lectured an Arab (from North Africa, living in Germany) about the holocaust. That was shortly after the Lebanon war, i.e pretty much the moment he'd be least likely to listen about the time the Jews were victims.

However, since I wasn't exactly a rabid pro-Israeli , he did listen to me. He couldn't believe it was true, or that it was nearly as important as the Israelis make it out to be; but after a long talk, he accepted the idea. Now, I hope he betters understand why Israel acts the way it does. Precisely because he had his typical worldview challenged, not encouraged.

why is the holocaust so hard to believe?

Becuase knowing about it certainly contributes to not hate the Jews. Duh.

If you think the evil Joos run the world in secret, it's kind of hard to believe that 6 million of them could be slaughtered...

I'm not saying I hate the jews (just playing devil's advocate), but I feel like I could hate the jews even if 4 or 5 million were killed. What happened back then doesn't affect anything going on today. If I were to hate them, I could still do so.

It's also the same reasoning that I won't go easy on them just because people of their same religion went through that. Yes I have heard stories how everyone knew someone who was there. I don't care. Don't expect me to treat you any differently because of it.

the same reasoning people believe Bush was behind 9/11. It further's his cause.

I thought it would be against the law NOT to teach the Holocaust and shove it down everyone's throat. Surely that would be the case in Germany.
