She needs to be fired and prevented from ever working for the court again in any capacity. She has proven she has no respect for the laws of the nation she is in and that she cannot be trusted to implement those laws. She instead forced her own religion upon other people and that can never be accepted.

      2. Sending her to prison could damage her relationship with her daughter.

That's how that case should have gone.

I have no more info about this judge than you do. There's no indication she's a Muslim. The way I picture her is rather as a dyed-in-the-wool German, who has a skewed view of multiculturalism.

How do you know? No article I've read mentioned her religion. Does it matter?

The answer is I assumed no one but a Muslim would be interjecting Muslim religious ideas in a court where they manifestly don't belong. Spiffor is right though; it could be some nutso lefty who is ashamed of being German and thinks she's being nobly multicultural.

Maybe she didn't want to receive death threats on a regular basis. Sadly I'm only partly joking...

She thought she was being PC. She probably sweated bullets over whether to be PC in favor of women's interests or in favor of cultural diversity. Considering the conclusion she needed to be on medication.

I read some article about a female German muslim politician (Turkish background if I remember correctly) who received death threats for openly embracing German culture and demanding that other muslims would do the same. The story was posted on some dubious nationalist site so I'm curious to know what was really going on.

What about this would be a Freudian 'failed act' - she wanted to resign, but couldn't come to assume it?

I can't remember reading about such a story. Do you still have the link?

The most likely scenario seems to me that German law requires extraordinary circumstances for this kind of quick divorce, and in considering the culture of the parties (as she saw it, at least) when determining whether the circumstances were extraordinary, she thought she was merely being faithful to German law. Maybe some of our resident Germans can correct me on the ins and outs of their divorce law.

That said, she did a bumblingtastic job of it, and I'm glad to see people on all sides going on record that Sharia has no place in German courts.

I googled for it and found that her name is Seyran Ates. Most links are in German, the first links in English I found are from "Western Resistance" and Fox News. It seems like she's getting in trouble for opposing "honor" violence:

o “You should receive the highest punishment possible for your nasty, dirty existence.”

o “You are a Nazi. You support the racists that hate Turks.”

o “How can you betray us, you whore.”

In June, an enraged husband attacked Ates in a courthouse as she accompanied his wife, a client who was about to start divorce proceedings. “You whore. What ideas have you been putting into my wife’s head?” the assailant shouted as he beat his wife and attempted to strike Ates.

For 20 years Ates has endured attacks and threats from Turkish men as she represented the wives who accused them of abuse and sought divorces. She has been shot and badly wounded, she has been beaten, and she receives daily death threats. Police guard her home.

Now she has decided to give up her Berlin law practice, because it is too dangerous to continue.

For security reasons, interviews with Ates must be arranged through trusted intermediaries. Her name is disguised on the buzzer in the lobby of her apartment house. [etc]
Sure, Fox News isn't really a reliable news source but maybe the story sounds familiar.

Yes, that name does ring a bell. The Fox News article is correct, but outdated.

She's not a politician, but an attorney in Berlin, who defends (Muslim) women's right in courts against their husbands/families. During her work she suffered frequently from verbal abuse, and a couple of months ago she was attacked and beaten in public by a husband of one of her clients. After that she decided that this was enough and quit her job (see above). Then a major German newspaper (DIE ZEIT) printed a huge article about her, calling her one of Germany's true heros (fair enough), and AFAIK this article and the popular support it rallied made her continue her work.

Since then she appeared in several political talkshows, and is now frequently interviewed by magazines and newspapers. She also wrote a book about her struggle against her own family and against xenophobia in Germany while she tried to become an attorney.

She has first hand experience in "honor violence", and is fighting in the front line against it.

                                Seyran Ates

Maybe she'll comment on the case in the OP. If so I'll let you know.
