Did they lose their "base" though? I thought they were pretty staunch and its difficult to see a true-right-winger voting for the Democrats
They didn't appear to lose their base. Their base just became much less enthusiastic to vote and to contribute money and time volunteering. And then you have the negative water cooler talk, which had a big impact.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
The issue is that the current Republicans, even if you favor that side, are ****ups of the highest order. They would probably still be in the lead if it was another group leading the party.
And I don't necessarily include the authoritarian stuff as what is weakening them, unfortunately. Instead it is group of factors...

While I sympathyze, any financial planning strategy that was based on a tax loophole is fundamentally faulty. Bottom line for me on the trusts was that they HAD to be taxed. Otherwise the next trusts would have been some huge oil companies and some of the chartered banks with just huge losses in tax revenue.
Well, initially the strategy was based on the assumption that high oil prices and a weak US dollar were a safe bet. That and I'd just decided that I needed a non-volatile investment.
I suppose I haven't given the matter that much thought, but it seems now the trusts are taxed twice: once when the company makes money and once when it pays out the dividend. To be fair, it's not the level of tax I object to, it's the sudden massive drop in my share price when the change was announced.
I blame Harper to the extent he promised otherwise but as a policy, the trusts had to be taxed IMHO. Their status had grown to the point that the traditional corporate structure was almost doomed to extinction
I would accuse the Conservatives of taking my money to pay off other people to vote for them, but technically my losses are due to decreased market value, not actual taxes.
At any rate, it'll be a cold day in Hell before I vote Conservative.

The same is true of regular corporations as well. The company's earnings are taxed, and those who make capital gains or receive dividends off the company's stock also have those taxed as income.
It would seem to make issuing or selling shares always an inferior strategy to taking out a loan.
The "theory" of Canadian taxation is is that a dollar of income in a sole proprietorship will attract a similar amount of tax as a dollar of income paid in dividends ( even though the latter is taxed twice).
It doesn't work perfectly but the tax on dividends is substantially less than an individual pays on most other forms of income ( to reflect the previous taxes paid to some extent)
The problem with the income trusts was that the trust paid zero tax on any amount it forwarded as distributions and much of those distributions were going to non-residents or people with very low tax rates resulting in a net tax loss to government
