I really like Nietzsche; also Kierkegaard.

I also like Aristotle; (more than Plato). Specially how he succeed to dismantle Plato republic. (I think he wrote this in his book named Politics)

I seriously would say Jesus; but I wouldn't call him a philosopher.

Is Pascal respected as a philosopher, or only as a mathematician?

I would say he is respected (like Leibniz) as a philosophers(my opinions is Pascal could be recognized as the founder of existentialism) and he was also a great mathematician, developing new field.(before he abandoned math and science)

Yes, but Pascal was not a rationalist, and I think I recall reading of Voltaire making fun of him, so maybe he (Pascal) is not respected as a philosopher, you know, to christianish.

His "Pensees" I guess the english translation is "Thoughts" is my fave book written by a frenchman.

Wiki describe Pascal as a religious philosopher, which sound good to me.

                          My philosophy team:

Zeno of Elea as goalkeeper. Things would take an infinite time to get to him or past him, so the other side would never score.

                          Next up:

Thomas Aquinas- big hunk of philosophisin' wit'attitude.

Albertus Magnus- wide range of knowledge, good in defence and can switch to attack if necessary. Taught Aquinas, so good teamwork.

                          Next three:

'Big' Al Biruni, good at noting down observable phenomena and extrapolating from the data, expert people watcher.

Johnny Duns 'Dunce' Scotus: separates faith and reason, relentless in logical attack.

Moses Maimonides: a good team player, keeps all the rest calm and centred when they might be perplexed.

                          Three more:

William Of Ockham: mediaevally parsimonious, he reduces anxiety about the possible number of offensive moves from the other team.

David Hume: reinforces scepticism, stops flights of fancy.

Bishop Berkeley: gets the opposition anxious about attacks they can't see clearly.

Final two: Henri Bergson. Convinces his teammates to go with their hunches occasionally. Cheers them up when they feel low.

Ibn Khaldun: encyclopaedically clever, with Albertus Magnus able to surmise the play of the other team based on previous experiences.

Team manager: Aristotle. Respected by all as the 'onlie begetter'.

                          Magrittean philosopher, M. Bergson

                            Friedrich Nietzsche

I totally disagree with him, but he dares to conclude the only right conclusion that can be pulled from atheism.
The "Got is tot" sprache in "So sprach Zarathustra" nails it perfectly, how we would be and ultimately will be if there is no (belief) in God.
And his idea of the antichrist is the perfect Biblical renderation of the Antichrist.

I totally disagree with Nietzsche, but I do respect him.
And no, Jesus is not a philosopher.

Exactly. Odin has probably read a paragraph on him in the first page of an introduction to atomism, and assumed the guy was "cool".

Pascal is a respected and often quoted philosopher, in France at least. I would guess he is not as recognized in Anglo-Saxon circles ( ), but then again there's plenty wrong with American philosophy.
