Plaza Bank refers to Columbia Center tallest building west of the Mississippi. A logical choice of buildings to be targetted.

I got the story from MotherJones.com, one of their links in turn links to WIRED.com (as in WIRED Magazine) and here's the Plaza Bank's website About Us page. I'm not going to search through the KSM transcript to find his claim, but both Mother Jones (which has been around since 1975) and WIRED Magazine are responsible journalistic publications.

When the tallest building in Seattle opened in 1985 it was officially called the Columbia Center and Plaza Building. However, everyone just called it the Columbia Center. It's name has changed over the years and has also been known as the Columbia Seafirst Center (after Seafirst Bank), then Bank of America Tower. There's an underground concourse that connects the building to the Bank of America Fifth Avenue Plaza. A few years ago its name was changed back to the Columbia Center (this time without the "Plaza"), hopefully for good.

It doesn't surprise me one bit that KSM would be confused as to the name of the building. Even Seattlites call it any number of things. I've always called it the Columbia Center, but I've also heard it called The Plaza Building.

The 9/11 Commission identified it as one of al-Qaeda's Second Wave targets.

The corporate offices for The Plaza Bank is located on the 37th floor of the City Center Building about seven blocks away. I doubt that anyone in al-Qaeda would consider this little regional bank as a primary target, or even knew it existed. I certainly didn't.

WASHINGTON -- Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, confessed to those and a string of other terrorism plots, including one in Washington state, during a military hearing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to a transcript released Wednesday by the Pentagon.

Buried on page 18 of the transcript is the claim that Mohammed's terrorists planned to hit a "Plaza Bank" in Washington state during the second wave of attacks after Sept. 11. The transcript gives no further details.

No Seattle bank went by that name before 2006. But in 2004, the Sept. 11 commission concluded that Mohammed had originally planned the attacks to include "the tallest buildings in California and Washington state." The Columbia Center in Seattle is the tallest building in Washington.

Interesting, thank you LotM. My eyes were starting to bleed trying to find other sources that linked directly to the "Plaza Bank, Washington state" claim. Seeing as he was captured in 2003, how would even be aware of the Plaza Bank in Washington state, which didn't exist until three years later?

look, if he was head of ops, couldnt he claim responsibility for anything done by someone who reported to him, no matter how far down the chain? Or is AQ run so differently from any western bureaucracy?

I thought it was clear, he was referring to the Columbia Center, and got the name confused for the reasons mentioned in my earlier post.

Either that or his EEVIL interogators got the name confused. Youd think theyd have been more careful though.

I guess what the interogators should have done, to avoid the prospect of being accused of torturing this out of him, was when he got confused and said "Plaza bank" they should have corrected him and said "dont you mean the Columbia Center"

But he was captured in 2003. His leadership ended in 2003. How can he claim responsibility for anything against a target that didn't exist at the time of his capture, or is Gitmo just like any prison in the US where you can order hits (both on people and of smack) from the comfort of your life-sentence cell? And again, how can he even be aware of the Plaza Bank in Washington State if he was captured and imprisoned at Gitmo 3 years before it was founded?
