It's not just the instructors, it's the overall uselessness of the classes that I have a problem with. College is useless, the piece of paper that said you wasted your time and money on it is not. That's my issue.

Most people learn a lot in college. I don't know about getting your money worth though. There's probably some question to that. It's a product of our corporatist society.

I really think you missed my point. What did you study anyway?

I had the state pay my tuition for me I actually broke even a couple semesters in terms of my TA salary vs. (tiny) living expenses.

Well the prices on tuition and textbooks are definitely too high.

That 2000$ is just tuition and books. That's not counting all the time you waste that could be used making money.

I pay 3.8k a semester for tuition alone and that's a pretty good deal.

The top cost for college is 40k a year. Not everyone can or wants to go to a college where tuition is only 2k a semester. You probably went to a public institution. There are way too many students wanting to attend college today then we have reasonable room in college for. This includes public institutions. Tuition is even increasing fast at public schools and the states are subsidising less and less. Also, some schools charge more to make their institutions elite.

Textbooks are something else. To me the problem with textbooks is that the professor requires the textbook and then the students are forced to pay whatever the price is. There's not enough competition in the market and there is no one putting pressure on these companies to lower prices. Every year they go up faster than inflation.

College costs are increasing at twice the rate of inflation. Why do you think that is?

The other thing is that with text books they come out with a new edition all the time and so force people to pay for new books when all they really did was change a couple of pages. For example, a book I'm using right now for one of my classes is 4 editions old and it's from 1997. If I had bought the new edition it would cost me 140$, but I got the really old one for 5$ on half-price.com and it hasn't caused any problems.

Dear God, you really do spout a lot of idiocy. Google the "signalling effect of education". Even if education has no effect whatsoever on productivity, it still allows employers to see which young people are more able, through self-selection.

Then why not drop out and do it? If you're not learning anything and don't need the employability of a degree, why study for one?

But as said, perhaps it's because you go to a bad or just unsuited college? I know I've learned a hell of a lot in the almost three years I've been at college.

Some people need more direct lecture instruction than others. We all learn at our own pace. I'm glad college was able to teach you so much you were otherwise incapable of learning on your own.

Well, over here we do learn most of the stuff on our own - lectures are optional, although can be useful as it's often quicker than reading the textbook. But what happens if you come across a tricky problem or concept? Do you spend hours sitting there trying to solve it of realise how it works, or ask an expert who'll explain it in 10 minutes? That's what college has been awesome for for me - I get all the resources I could ever need and twice-weekly meetings to make sure I've understood the last weeks work, answer any questions and look over typical problems on that topic or even go into some more advanced stuff if I'm interested.

Of course you're not incapable of learning it on your own, but you pay for the tuition and facilities that make it a lot easier and quicker to do so. I couldn't have learned quite as much as I have done if I'd done it all myself. I certainly wouldn't have had anywhere as good a time either, nor done so many cool projects and been invited to as many amazing events.
