This isn't the first time cows have eaten birds.

The last time, IIRC, the cattle were in an area with little calcium in the soil, so the grass wasn't supplying their need.

They took to eating any bird they could catch, for the calcium in their bones.

anyway, that would make a good "cow and a chicken" cartoon special. And it support the aneeshm's claim that India is, well, special. What I'm suprised is that the cows didn't start it earlier and that they are satisfied with chicken when there are a lot of people around who, due to their religious beliefs, wouldn't be able to defend themselves.
