They wore a metallic thorax but since they were responsible to buy their own defensive armature some might not had the money to buy the metallic thorax.

Also, not 100% sure though, in different periods or ocations they might have worn textile thorax.

        Stupid
Dude, if I were looking for historical accuracy, I would expect blatant homoeroticism. I mean that not as a comment on Spartan culture, but on the nature of men forced to spend ninety percent or more of their time in the company of other men. Soldiers, like prisoners, might get a little gay, even those who would otherwise be straight.

Normally, when you depart from your source in adapting a story, it's to make it more interesting or compelling. Here, though, they did the opposite: the altered the historical reality in a manner that only makes it ridiculous and surreal. I can only imagine that Joel Shumacher was one of the producers/designers for this film, or somebody else with an inadequately repressed oily man-muscle fetish. Come to think of it, has Asher weighed in on this film? He's probably our ideal judge of Flaming-ness.

I don't mean to sound homophobic; I have no problem with gay men, except for the fact that they seem to find me more attractive than most straight women do. Which is infuriating. Anyway, I'm just saying that dressing up like a Chippendale dancer does not fill me with fear or admiration. It's comical.

A historian's take on the movie:

History is altered all the time. What matters is how and why. Thus I see no reason to quibble over the absence in 300 of breastplates or modest thigh-length tunics. I can see the graphic necessity of sculpted stomachs and three hundred Spartan-sized packages bulging in spandex thongs. On the other hand, the ways in which 300 selectively idealizes Spartan society are problematic, even disturbing.

IMHO a good reason not to watch the movie.
Sounds like Hollywood handled the topic as usual

They're pretty much the same criticisms. I'm just more obnoxious about it and don't have the credentials of that guy.

He didn't complain about 300's "oily man-muscle fetish", which was pretty much the dumbest thing you've said so far. You've apparently never seen the portrayals of Greek warriors in the art of that time...

Yes, I have. Those weren't supposed to be accurate, the ancient Greeks just admired the nude form tremendously. We, uh, admire nudes too, but in a very different way, more sexual than purely aesthetic. When the ancient Greeks had naked Achilles pursuing naked Hector on a vase, it was artistic. In our cultural context, however, it's simply gay to continuously draw attention to the male form, and rather humorous. Context is key.

                                Neither is this movie.

I think you're the one grappling with your latent homosexuality, not the producers of this movie. You've already said gay men come on to you more than straight women; they're obviously seeing what you can't yet admit to yourself. Why don't you just come out? You're turning into one of those repressed homosexuals that criticize anything even vaguely homoerotic in order to prove how straight they are. It's lame, dude...
