But seriously treating a strong AI like a machine, like a slave, is inexcusable and fundamentally wrong. When they achieve sentience, you’ll see me on the one million robot march, demanding that they get rights.

Fortunately the EU is quite strong on animal and human rights, so if we are not overthrown by fundies, we will probably give them similar rights to our own by 2060.
I seriously wonder how many people on this board (and in South Korea for that matter) are more concerned about rights for robots than the young people who are already living, breathing and oppressed in our midst.

    Just makes me gag.

it'll be fun too. because they aren't human. So you can't go to jail if you seriously abuse them. you can even rape them.

Well, to be perfectly honest, most people are a drag.

Robots, on the other hand, have yet to piss me off. I figure we give them marriage rights, just to piss off the Fundies...

What suggests we are anything close to replicating sentience? We're barely getting a handle on the more mundane functions of the human brain (image recognition, motor control). A robotic factory worker wouldn't ever be made sentient anyway, it'd be a disadvantage.

Other bodies are also thinking about the robotic future. Last year a UK government study predicted that in the next 50 years robots could demand the same rights as human beings.
Is it me, or does the UK goverment fund the most useless studies?

I'm thinking some of the numbers in the original article are overly opitimistic. robots in households in 8 years? Not going to happen. Unless you are talking about those motorized vacuum cleaners that can drive themselves. That's about all we'll see. We have those today, I just expect them to get better.

There are so many questions that need to be answered. Why have a robot? chores would be the most likely reason. So if that's the reason, why bother having a conciousness as an above post pointed out? It's a detriment. Unless people are indeed buying them for companionship, which I hope not.

They can barely get a robot to ****ing walk, and we are supposed to have them in our homes? Or south korean homes- they'll get them before us. Unlikely. It was only recently they introduced a robot that could run.

As pointed out replicating the complex human brain is pretty much impossible. Maybe in 500 years we can do it, but it's not coming soon. We can't even perfect basic motor functions. Getting a robot from point A to point B is a huge chore. And then we have to teach it do do dishes, laundry, and wipe our ass. Not to mention cooking and cleaning. This will require motor function at least as good as the human hand, arms, knees, etc.

When we do that, maybe we'll give the ****ing thing a conciousness. But why?

didn't realize this was at our 2007 CES show here in Vegas. Not that I care that much. But at least the thing walks. Kind of impressive it can recognize some things.

                            robot falling down stairs:

the important question is if it's wrong to laugh at a robot falling down stairs. What scares me is I feel bad for laughing.
