I think per capita maps would really tell the tale.

What I meant was, it should be the per capita ratio applied to the actual space.

Put another way, the actual map should be the starting point and the differences in the per capita measurement should be the distorting factors.

No because using population density as a starting point would distort the map.

In fact, population density could be one of these maps. Japan and Bangladesh would look much larger while Russia and Canada would appear much smaller.
