  • What if we (mankind) never travel to the stars...

What if we never travel to the stars, discover new worlds, find other intelligent beings, and star wars, star treck, futurama, etc instead of being science fiction, are fantasy?

Pointy end in the other fellow. Rinse and repeat. Until we own everything.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Mankind isn't meant to travel the stars. That's for bacteria.

There's enough traveling to do within our own solar system to keep us busy for a quite a while.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I'm pretty sure that will be the case. Don't care. I'd be dead by the time it happened anyway.

The thing is I feel dreaming of flying 200 years ago was not totally pointless because airplanes, zeppelins etc would be invented
But when mankind realizes that we will never travel to the starrs, explore new worlds etc, that we are stuck on earth, or earth + mars at most, there will be some kind of depression.

errrrrr.......... How many people do you think go on living solely for the hope of one day visiting Alpha Centauri? Not many I'll wager.

I don't see why we have to assume that traveling to another star is so utterly impossible. If you had a whole lot of cash you could build a ship with a nuclear reactor for internal power, recycle waste for food, put some couples on board to breed and then just shoot them onward towards Alpha Centauri with the expectation that it will take several generations to get there. See? It's not impossible!

Haven't some of our deep space probes reached speeds greater than 100,000 mph?
"I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

It's not the individual aspiration, it's the way the idea of expansion powerfully affects the spirit of a people, the way an entire society views itself.
