Army secretary resigns in scandal's wake

WASHINGTON - Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey resigned Friday as the Bush administration struggled to cope with the fallout from a scandal over substandard conditions for wounded
Iraq soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

The surprise move came one day after Harvey fired the two-star general in charge of the medical center in response to disclosures of problems at the hospital compound.

Harvey has been the Army secretary since November 2004. His resignation was announced by Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

God dammit, Dr. Harvey does not deserve to be treated like this.

I was wondering about something like this when the guy who'd been in charge of Reed for six months got fired and they brought in the guy who'd been running it a few years before. It smelled like a scapegoating cover up...and now it looks like it probably was.

Personally, I blame Chaney. Let's fire him too.

Scapegoats, I can almost picture how it went down, only certain amounts of monies available and the upkeep of the facility was not at the top of prioty, battlefront was.

Yes when your in charge you have to be in control, but you dont control the allocation of funding, and what it would take would be massives construction funds, funds at the current time being funnelled into the war efforts, and not on the homefront/repair side of the house.

But this isnt the first War where Veterans took it on the chin after laying their life down for their country, nope, and it wont be the last.

I have to stop reading Tom Clancy novels. In those, Walter Reed Army Medical Center is always presented as being a top notch facility.

The medical equipment and staff are, Asmodean.

The medical barracks are the issue. Granted, they aren't that much worse than military housing I've lived in, but, you know, maybe the guys who've been shot/blown up should be living in slightly better accommodation's.

                  Is all I'm saying.

Walter Reed is a top-notch facility. For research and treatment. As Lonestar said, they don't put quite as much money into the barracks...

The ****er deserves to be locked up for letting this happen on his watch. Shame on you, Lonestar, for being unAmerican in defending his stupidity.

Lonestar, I live in Jacksonville and operate aboard Camp lejeune and surrounding bases in charge of all ready mix concrete operations for my company

They have doing a lot to improve Berkley Manor/Paradise Point, Tarawa Terrace Housing and Midway Park.

All new units except for Berkley manor and Paradise Point, those are being completed gutted and refurbished.

No more Knox Trailer Park either

                            What years were you here?

Ok..I agree these were pathetic but in the middle of massive construction funding for say 3 years and still have at least another 3 years to go.

Quality of Life, which is what we are speaking of, is on the "improving side" with lots of new B E Q's (Bachelor Enlisted Quarters) basically Barracks.

We have been in the construction phase of 12 units over last 5 years.
