The bigger problem is that Vista is a piece of derivative horse****.

XP is ok but vista's such an OS X knockoff - and a pointless, bad one without the security features- - that MS is still behind apple. ugh.

For the ordinary PC user (which excludes most of those who post on computer issues here at 'Poly) Vista is a mess. I spend several hours a day trying to talk people through setting up broadband connections on Vista. Everything takes twice as long as it does with XP - assuming it actually consents to work at all.

Many of the manufacturers of wireless adapters haven't got working drivers yet, IE7 can insist on a working internet connection before it will consent to start and allow you to set up a router to connect to the internet. Basically, for users who can barely put in a CD and click "yes" to install a program, Vista is a disaster of the proportions only MS seems capable of.

Right now Vista is Bill Gates way of saying "buy a Mac".

... I plugged in the ethernet cable and it just worked.

Aren't you a tech student? Shouldn't you at least have minimal exposure to unix? Symlinks are a sort of pointer to a file or folder that's transparent to the filesystem. Like, if I had a symlink C:\User\Foo that pointed to C:\Foo, and a program tried to access C:\User\Foo\filename, it would actually access C:\Foo\filename.

Uhh..... WTF is new about that? All variants of *nix have had them for decades. I assumed they were something really new and exciting and innovative, judging by the way you were going on about them.

If this is the sort of thing people get all worked up about when they talk of Vista.......

And as for that comment about "minimal exposure to unix", I'm typing this from my home computer running GNU/Linux.

Anyone who calls it GNU\Linux doesn't deserve to live.

I do that just to piss you off, Asher. In fact, I originally typed just "Linux", then wagered with myself whether or not I'd get a response if I changed it to "GNU/Linux". I won that wager.

Real hardcore dudes are still building their own PDP-10s and coding spacewar to it, except better features, and bumming the code down to 89 lines. NO pizza, YES to Chinese food.

Is there something special about these symlinks? It's been in *nix...?
