Also, Spiffor, what does "bouffon" mean in French?

Is it someone who is laughed at?

Oh, I thought you did it on purpose, in context with the whole conversation.

"Bouffon" traditionally means someone who's funny, though the humour isn't subtle at all. Among the French humorists, Jean-Marie Bigard has a humour based on sex and crude words, but is brilliant about it. He could be considered a modern-day "bouffon".

Sounds like an identical definition to me as the English version...

Don't get me wrong, people laugh with Bigard, not at him.

In the same sense that people laugh with Jim Carrey, not at him?

Jim Carrey's comedy style very much encompasses a "buffoon".

Jim Carrey could be considered a bouffon too. But he's not the only kind there is: he's mostly funny because of his expressions, which make him look laughable. Whereas Bigard is a typical stand up comedian (just like Seinfeld when he does stand-up), except that his jokes are on the vulgar side

Hmm! I wonder if that has any relevance to the origin of the word?
from buffare "to puff out the cheeks," a comic gesture

This is the kind of meaning from every language the word is in, including the languages that originated it.

If there is any additional French-specific meaning, it's because French people are idiots and don't know the meaning of the words they use.

                      • If the French were creative, they could've put up a fight to Germany's invasions.

No, they were not creative -- they were predictable and weak.

We haven't been militaristic since Napoleon. And at that time, we did pwn the Germans bigtime.
